First and always most important for any safe is its lock and the Fort Knox Spartan 6637 Gun Safe comes standard with the S&G Mechanical Lock, UL approved Type 2. This is the highest quality mechanical lock in the industry that is designed to last forever. It uses the traditional 3 number combination on a spy-proof dial that prevents others from seeing you spin the combination.

UL Approved Type 1 Electronic Lock – S&G

There is also a second lock option that is the S&G electronic lock. This is an excellent quality lock made by the oldest lock company in the United States. UL Approved type 1 is the highest security rating available and I highly recommend this lock.

This lock features a 6 digit electronic code that is easy to program to your own custom combination. In addition, the lock opens 10,000+ times on just one battery. Finally, there are over 1 million possible combinations.

If all that is not enough, S&G’s high-security electronic locks are proven to withstand military-level EMP attacks. S&G tested this lock using the U.S. military’s highest EMP impact standard. An independent lab applied a radiant transient electromagnetic field on this keypad following the Military Standard MIL-STD461F, Method RS105 at 50 kV/m peak exposure. At the end of the testing series the S&G locks were still fully functional.

Hard Plate and Re-Locker

Protecting either lock option is both a hard plate and internal re-locker. The Hard plate is a piece of hardened steel that absolutely destroys drill bits. The internal re-locker fires if the lock is punched through securing the bolts in place. Fort Knox uses a ball bearing hard plate which is better than the traditional hardened steel because it causes the drill bit to slip off of the round balls. Both of these are essential security features and included on this safe.

When it comes to security the Fort Knox Spartan 6637 gun safe begins where most gun safes end. It features a 3/8″ steel door in addition to a 3/16″ steel body. That is a significant amount of steel for their “entry level” safe. Most entry level safes are 14 gauge steel for reference. Securing the door are 1-1/2″ solid steel locking bolts that extend deep into the safes body.

All of this security earned the Spartan series the UL RSC burglary rating. These requirements ensure the safe can withstand an attack on the door with multiple different tools for a minimum of 5 minutes each. If the standard security on this safe is not enough for you, you can also add up to four additional 10 gauge steel liners.

Fire Rating – Fort Knox Spartan 6637 Gun Safe

Another advanced feature of Fort Knox Gun Safes is the Inferno Shield fire protection. Fort Knox limits the thermal conductivity by lining the inside of their vaults with a proprietary blend of a hydrogen bond fireboard and lock it in place using a stud weld process. They also test this process with a full 9 sensor house simulated test and show you the exact details in the graph below. Others just can’t match up.

The Spartan series specifically, is fire rated for 50 minutes at 1450 degrees. The temperature used in the test is significantly hotter than competitors who only test their safes at 1200 degrees. So if it was an apples to apples comparison, the Fort Knox Spartan gun safes would likely last 90 minutes or more.

Style and Function

The Fort Knox Spartan Gun Safes are available in a variety of textured and gloss color options. Hardware includes a 5-spoke handle and matching keypad available in black chrome, silver and gold. The interior carpeting is available in silver or beige and you can customize the interior to your specification for the amount of guns you want to store or switch it to an all shelf interior. Fort Knox Inc. warrants to the original purchaser only, that each new vault will be free from defects in material and workmanship for the lifetime of the original purchaser from the date of delivery. Integral units such as locks are subject to this same warranty.

This is a lifetime warranty on all components of the safe and the absolute best warranty in the industry. Fort Knox safes may cost more, but they are guaranteed for life. This is an absolute testament to the superior quality of the product.
