Overview
Quality Biometric handgun safes are hard to come by. Most models you find online use the exact same low quality biometric fingerprint scanner, tubular key override, thin steel construction and little to no warranty. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of the Top 3 Best Biometric Fingerprint Handgun Safes that you can trust. All of these models have a high level of security, high quality biometric scanners, solid steel steel construction and are sold by companies who actually honor their warranty.
Lock – Top 3 Best Biometric Handgun Safes
First and always most important for any handgun safe is the lock. All three of these handgun safes from Verifi, Vaultek and RPNB feature high quality biometric fingerprint scanners but vary in their style.
Verifi S5000 Handgun Safe – FBI Certified Biometric Lock
Verifi uses a biometric fingerprint scanner that is the only FBI certified fingerprint sensor on any gun safe. The large-area capacitive TouchChip fingerprint sensor captures high-resolution fingerprint images for super quick access to firearms in an emergency. Next, it automatically performs a set of thorough self-diagnostic tests on the batteries, fingerprint sensor, and safe lock mechanisms every 24 hours and after every use. It has an LCD display on the front that shows the battery percentage. Overall, this is a very advanced locking mechanism.
Vaultek MXi High Resolution Scanner
The Vaultek MXi WiFi Biometric Handgun Safe uses a large combination of entry methods including a high resolution biometric fingerprint scanner, app access via a WiFi connection, hidden Nano Smart Key and a 4-8 digit backlit LED keypad electronic lock with key override. The buttons on the keypad are firm and easy to use with a feel that provides feedback. There are over 19 million possible keypad combinations and a proximity sensor illuminates the keypad in low light situations.
The lock is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that lasts 4-6 months on a single charge. You can also leave the safe plugged in if you store it on your nightstand. The battery can recharge in 2.5 hours. Finally, the key override is usually a feature I despise but Vaultek uses a very high security laser engraved key that I approve of. These laser cut keys are pick proof and even lock pickers like LockPickingLawyer on Youtube approve of them.
RPNB RP2004 500 DPI Biometric Scanner
The RPNB RP2004 High Capacity Multi-Function Pistol Safe uses not only a 4-6 digit backlit LED keypad electronic lock but also a 500 DPI smart biometric sensor capable of storing up to 20 fingerprints. In addition, a proximity sensor illuminates the keypad and scanner in low light situations.
Also, the lock is powered by four AAA batteries easily replaceable from the inside of the safe. Finally, the key override is a major weak spot on other RPNB safes but this one is upgraded to a high security laser cut key override that is not able to be picked open.
Security – Top 3 Best Biometric Fingerprint Handgun Safes
Since Handgun Safes are not tested by UL like full size gun safes and home safes, California Department of Justice has by de-facto become the trusted source to determine if a handgun is secure or not. This test is far too easy to pass and while all three of these models are CA DOJ approved as firearm safety devices, the Verify and Vaultek models are so much more than just that and far exceed the requirements.
Verifi S5000 & Vaultek MXi Handgun Safe
The Verifi and Vaultek safes don’t just have a good lock, they are also built very strong. The doors are built with 12 gauge steel and the body is built with 14 gauge steel which is much thicker than the usual 16 gauge on competing safes like the RPNB RP2004. Finally, two 3/4″ motorized locking bolts secure the door on the Verifi and dual anti-impact locking latches secure the Vaultek. The Verifi safe has an auto close feature that automatically locks the safes as soon as you close it. All things considered, the Verifi and Vaultek handgun safes are very secure.
Style and Function – Top 3 Best Biometric Fingerprint Handgun Safes
Paint
This is where the Vaultek MXi stands out from the rest. Verifi and Verifi use a simple textured black powder coat paint that looks decent. Vaultek however, uses a high quality durable black paint that looks like a crinkled matte and is very high quality. This paint is highly durable and looks fantastic.
Accessories
Another key differentiator is the interior and accessories included. Verifi safes have an all metal interior with a thin piece of carpet. The RPNB safe has two compartments that are both lined with standard foam. The Vaultek MXi has a fully modular interior that can be customized with pistol racks, magazine storage compartments, adjustable shelving and more. All three models include internal LED Lights standard.
Warranty – Top 3 Best Biometric Fingerprint Handgun Safes
Both Vaultek and RPNB include a parts and labor warranty where they will pay for a locksmith or safe technician to come out to your home and repair the home safe on site and at no cost to you or send you a replacement free of charge. It is unclear with Verifi if you have to send it to the factory for repair. All three companies provide only a 1 year parts and labor warranty.
The Bottom Line
All three of these models are easily the Top 3 Best Biometric Fingerprint Handgun Safes. While the Verifi S5000 and Vaultek MXi are identical in steel thickness, I recommend the Verifi S5000 as the best overall for a few reasons. It has the highest quality FBI Certified Biometric Fingerprint Scanner and motorized locking bolts that provide better security.
