Vaultek has been making premium handgun safes for around 6 years now. They are the fastest growing handgun safe company with an incredible presence online. Nearly every influencer in the gun community backs them. Normally, I would look at that as a red flag and only due to a large marketing budget. However, tons of these partnerships aren’t even paid, people just really like their products. They utilize what used to be unreliable technology like biometric fingerprint scanners and app access but significantly improved the quality to make it reliable and long lasting. In this review, I’ll go over what makes the Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box a significant upgrade from it’s original predecessor and the best travel safe available.

Lock – Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box

First and always most important for any safe is its lock and the Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box uses a touch activated 4 digit backlit LED keypad electronic lock with key override. The buttons on the keypad are fully weatherproof and designed for travel. An original exploit of the LifePod 1.0 showed how to open the safe with a fork but that issue has been fully resolved in the 2.0 version.

The lock is powered by an internal 9 volt battery that lasts up to 1 year. It can also be used as a water resistant case with the lock deactivated. Finally, the key override is usually a feature I despise but Vaultek uses a very high security laser engraved key that I approve of. You can also fully disable the front keyway from the inside. For an extra $40 you can also have biometric fingerprint access via a scanner connected to the same system with the electronic lock and lock button. This is the same high quality scanner they use on all of their products and totally worth the little extra.

Security – Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box

The Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box is made of an advanced non-metal polymer construction aka plastic. This is not common among safes but you need to remember this is not a heavy duty steel safe for the home, but a lightweight, all weather lock box designed for travel. It is fully TSA Compliant for flying but not CA DOJ Approved due to the plastic construction. The side compression latches stay locked while the front latch is engaged making the lock box fully airtight. This also keeps the case closed if you drop it so it can not accidentally pop open. A lot of thought, design and engineering went into the construction of the Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box.

Style and Function

The Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box has tons of cool features included such as a removable tray, foam padding and 48″ security cable. You can also purchase different accessories to customize the lock box to your preference. There is over 10 different color and style options with different accessories and options like the fingerprint scanner. There really is a style and color for everyone. No other safe is water resistant, airtight, dust proof and floats in water. It’s the ultimate travel buddy for your handgun or pistol. The 2.0 version is also substantially bigger than the 1.0 which was the #1 complaint among original purchasers. It can fit full size handguns up to 9.25″ long and still have space for magazines or ammo.

The Bottom Line

Would I buy the Vaultek LifePod 2.0 Lock Box to store my handgun? Yes, I 100% absolutely would buy it but only for flying and short term travel. It is substantially more secure than portable lock boxes made by GunVault, SnapSafe and Amazon Basics and has better features like the electronic keypad, biometric scanner and all weather functionality. Would I buy it as my primary safe at home? No, I would not. I think there are much better options and I would opt to spend an extra $100 for the Stealth ShadowVault SV1.
