Vaultek has been making premium handgun safes for around 6 years now. They are the fastest growing safe company and have an incredible presence on Instagram, Youtube and are backed by nearly every influencer in the gun community. Normally, I would look at that as a red flag and only do to a large marketing budget but tons of these partnerships aren’t even paid, people just really like their products. They utilize what used to be unreliable technology like biometric fingerprint scanners and app access but significantly improved the quality to make it reliable and long lasting. They have now added to their impressive lineup and started to produce rifle safes. In this review, I’ll go over why I think the Vaultek RS800i Plus WiFi Biometric Rifle Safe is the coolest high tech rifle safe available, but overpriced from a security standpoint.

Lock

First and always most important for any safe is its lock and the Vaultek RS800i Plus WiFi Biometric Rifle Safe uses a large combination of entry methods including a biometric fingerprint scanner, app access via a WiFi connection, hidden Nano Smart Key and a 4-8 digit backlit LED keypad electronic lock with key override. The buttons on the keypad are firm and easy to use with a feel that provides feedback. There are over 19 million possible keypad combinations and a proximity sensor illuminates the keypad in low light situations. There is also an oversized LCD screen that provides quick visual feedback and user friendly programming. The lock is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that lasts 4 months on a single charge. You can also leave the safe plugged in if you store it on your nightstand and the battery can recharge in 3.5 hours. Finally, the key override is usually a feature I despise but Vaultek uses a very high security laser engraved key that I approve of. These laser cut keys are pick proof and even lock pickers like LockPickingLawyer on Youtube approve of them.

Security

The Vaultek RS800i Plus WiFi Biometric Rifle Safe is built super tough with full solid steel construction in addition to anti-pry bars, interior hinges and interior shielding that prevents tools from entering the safe and poking around at the release mechanism or programming buttons. Keeping the door in place are four solid steel locking bolts. While Vaultek calls this a “safe” and builds it with 14 gauge steel, without a fire rating, it is really more of a security cabinet and an expensive one at that. For this price point you can get a UL RSC Burglary Rated 12 gauge steel gun safe with 1 hour fire rating and UL approved high security lock. So while this gun cabinet is decently secure and has loads of cool tech, I want to make sure you are understanding what you are buying. Personally, I would opt for thicker steel, a higher security rating and a lock that will last a lifetime at this price point such as the Stealth UL28 Gun Safe or the Liberty USA Gun Safes. Again, this is just personal preference and if you want the alerts on your phone and biometric access, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Style and Function

The Vaultek RS800i Plus WiFi Biometric Rifle Safe is styled extremely well. The paint is so much better than the traditional textured black that usually comes out of China. It has a rugged finish similar to a trunk liner where you can feel the bumps within the paint. It also makes the safe extremely durable and resistant to scratches or damage. The logo on the front is very attractive and I’m positive you will impress your friends with this Vaultek biometric rifle safe. The interior of the Plus edition is loaded with accessories including multiple pistol racks, magazine racks, spring loaded AR mount, shelves, barrell mounts and a pre-installed front door pegboard. It comes with everything you need to customize this rifle safe to your exact specifications. The Nano key is also included which allows you to open the safe remotely from a hidden location. Very, very cool!

The Bottom Line

Would I buy the Vaultek RS800i Plus WiFi Biometric Rifle Safe to store my long guns and valuable? Personally, I would not. It has the cool factor and is loaded with tech but as someone who has worked in the safe industry for 30+ years, I value higher security, a fire rating and long term reliability. Vaultek has only been around for about 6 years now so we don’t know the long term reliability of all of this technology. If I consider the fact that I have to replace my iPhone and laptop every few years because the tech becomes out of date or obsolete, I would not want to include my safe in that category. I want something that will last me for decades and be the only safe I buy in my lifetime. Also considering the price of this unit, there are much higher security options available that are far less expensive with UL RSC Burglary Ratings, fire ratings and UL approved high security locks like the Stealth UL14 Gun Safe and the Liberty Revere 30 Gun Safe.
